I have to tutor a child at a local elementary school. The one I'm working with is a 4th grade girl, so for reading I've brought in High Hopes For Addy the last few weeks. I tutor the same child for about 45min every Wed and Fri. My hope was that we could finish reading the short story before my service would end at winter vacation.

I promised her that when we finish the book I would bring my Addy doll to show her. Well, last week we completed the book so today I brought Addy in her pink dress with her bundle and Ida Bean doll.

Even though we worked on subtraction today, By reading the short story in weeks past we were able to work on reading skills, vocabulary and history. If she had trouble with a word I would help her with it and then ask her if she knew what it meant. We also talked about what a boarding house was and why $10 was a lot of money back then and schools and homes didn't have things like electricity and indoor plumbing.

When I brought the doll I brought the book we read back with me so she could compare the doll with the book's illustrations. She saw how she was wearing the same pink dress and I explained about the cowrie shell.

All these dolls and books I've spent my money on over the years truly did some good today. I couldn't be happier and neither can Addy!
